ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Every age throws its own challenges to the writers and their texts, demanding contemporary relevance.  Great writers have always withstood the tests of all times.  Shakespeare, above all writers — ancient, medieval, modern – has withstood these tests much more successfully than any other, be it Homer or Virgil, Dante or Chaucer, Marlowe or Milton.  The latest challenge that is being posed in our time is by the dominant duo of Business and Technology, demanding of Shakespeare and other writers their contemporary relevance.  In order to satisfy the utilitarian demand, concerned scholars have already come out with books like Say It Like Shakespeare by Clifford Leech, and Write Like Hemingway by Andrew Wilson.  Written by teachers and trainers linked with business and management studies, these books show how great writers like Shakespeare and Hemingway teach us better communicative skills both in the art of speaking as well as writing than any other book of instruction on the subject by an ordinary practitioner of the language.

However, since forms of communication in great writers like Shakespeare are not limited to business purposes alone, this conference has been planned to bring out various forms of communication that the plays and poetry of Shakespeare, available in all languages of the world, offer to enrich our skills for all occasions in life.  The rhetorical and aesthetic uses of language, in which Shakespeare again excels all other writers, are equally or more important even in the corporate world, leave aside the other equally or more important sectors of our life.

This conference, therefore, is designed to provide an opportunity for young scholars as well as the old for an interface with scholars from various disciplines of knowledge and teaching.  The three-day explorations of the potentials of the English language that a great writer like Shakespeare offers would come out, it is expected, with a guide map to our institutions of higher learning, especially those imparting technical and professional knowledge and training.  Just as we use extra means to improve the looks of articles as well as our own, so do we use the devices of rhetoric to make our communication more effective and impressive, and pleasant and beautiful.  The young scholars and teachers, desirous of participating in the conference, may attempt research papers on any of the following sub-themes.

1.     Dramatic Form of Communication.

2.     Forms of Communication in Shakespeare.

3.     Uses of Rhetoric in the Roman Plays or Any Individual Play.

4.     Discourse Analysis of a Famous Speech, such as Hamlet's 'To Be or Not to Be,’ or  Portia's 'The Quality of Mercy,’ or any other.

5.     Aesthetic Uses of English in Shakespeare – Poetic,

Decorative, Refining, etc.

6.     Business Speeches in Shakespeare.

7.     Law Discourse in Shakespeare.

8.     Technical Use of English in Shakespeare.

9.     Linguistic Elements in Love Poetry of Shakespeare.

10.   Reason and Emotion in Communication.

11.   Logic and Logistics in any of the Famous Speeches in Shakespeare.

12.   Pleasure and Purpose as Ingredients of Effective Communication, etc.

13.   Uses of Middle/Old English in Shakespeare.
